Day 15 Saturday 28 March 2009

Today was recovery day for Deb and me after our visit to Cairo. It was also the day we passed through the Suez Canal - this began around 4.00am when the pilot came on board, and lasted until around 5.00pm when he left the ship.
I was amazed to find that the canal is not very wide - we could see Saudi Arabia on one side and Egypt on the other. There was considerable difference in the scenery on either side, but still mainly desert. The Saudi side had very little in the way of buildings and the occasional military outpost, whereas on the Egyptian side there were little houses and villages scattered along the edge of the canal. We passed through two bridges - one was a swing bridge and the other a huge bridge that passed very high over the top of us.
The weather has changed to become quite cool and very windy, so we had to break out the warmer clothes in the evening.
We managed to go to a talk in the Illuminations Room by the Musical Historian on Irving Berlin and also the concert in the evening in the Royal Court Theatre with a great vocalist from Britain called Elaine Delmar who sang songs by Cole Porter and George Gershwin.
After the concert it was dinner in the Britannia Restaurant, and then to bed.
Today, Sunday is another quiet day at sea - on route to Pireaus in Greece, where tomorrow we explore Athens - so another big day to be experienced.
